US developer of JETTE, a patented two-pod vectored thruster system that lets torpedo-style AUVs hover and strafe; being integrated into HII's REMUS 300.
Tiburon Subsea Inc. is a US underwater robotics company that develops JETTE, a vectored propulsion and control system that lets torpedo-shaped autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) hover, move sideways and hold position. It lists offices in New York, Alameda and Charlottesville. The company was founded by chief executive Tim Taylor, an ocean explorer with more than 30 years in AUV and ROV operations who also leads the Lost 52 Project, the search effort that located the submarine USS Harder and, in late 2025, four further World War II wrecks in the South Pacific. Oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle is credited as a founder and advisor. RB Havens is chief technology officer and chief engineer, and Matt Watson is chief operating officer. Advisors include Jerry Sgobbo, a retired US Coast Guard commander who co-founded Dive Technologies, and Julian Tempelsman.
Conventional survey AUVs are driven by a stern propeller and steered by external fins, so they must keep moving to stay controllable. JETTE replaces or supplements that arrangement with two shrouded pods, one forward and one aft, each containing a custom thruster whose internal vectored jets redirect water flow. The company states five-degree-of-freedom control, enabling controlled hover, translation, pivoting, vertical ascent and descent, reverse thrust and holding station in a current, while preserving the vehicle's hydrodynamic shape and avoiding exposed propellers and control planes that can foul on debris. Fore and aft assemblies are controlled independently, which the company presents as fault tolerance: if one thruster is damaged, the vehicle keeps a self-rescue path. JETTE is designed to be retrofitted to existing AUVs as a modular upgrade and to scale across vehicle classes. The system was introduced publicly in May 2024, and US Patent No. 12,365,432, 'Vector Control Assemblies for Underwater Vehicles', has been granted, with foreign patents pending. No model numbers, dimensions, thrust or power figures are published.
Target applications named by the company and in trade coverage include pipeline inspection close to the seabed, moving along harbour walls, recovery by reversing into a submarine torpedo tube, mine countermeasures, port surveillance, offshore wind surveys, ocean science and coastal resilience. In October 2026 Tiburon Subsea announced a collaboration with HII's unmanned systems business to integrate JETTE into the REMUS 300 unmanned underwater vehicle, aimed at precise station keeping and close-proximity inspection. It is also a collaboration partner in C-Power's Partner Engagement and Co-development Program for a planned demonstration of the SeaRAY autonomous offshore power system. A related entity, Tiburon Defense, is described on the website as the company's dual-use arm. Funding has not been disclosed.
