SJTU-owned Shanghai institute (est. 1978) behind the Haima-4500 and Hailong 3,500 m deep-sea ROVs, also offering underwater engineering and diving services.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University Underwater Engineering Institute Co., Ltd. is a wholly owned state enterprise of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) that develops remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), underwater special-purpose equipment and diving systems, and provides underwater engineering, inspection and diving training services. The institute was established in 1978, has registered capital of 88.5 million yuan and three subsidiaries, and is based at 1500 Longwu Road, Shanghai. Affiliated companies linked from its website include Shanghai Haike Engineering Consulting, SJTU Haike Testing Technology and the SJTU Zhonghailong underwater defence research centre.
The institute says it began building ROVs in the early 1980s, making it one of the first organisations in China to do so, and it now designs, machines, integrates, tests, operates and maintains observation-class, light work-class, work-class and heavy work-class ROV systems, which it can customise for specific tasks. Its main vehicles include:
Haima-4500, the main result of a national 863 Program key project for a 4,500 m deep-sea ROV work system, with about 90% domestically produced technology and equipment. It is rated to 4,500 m and has 130 hp of power, a 260 kg payload, a size of 3.3 x 1.8 x 2 m, a weight of 4,396 kg and a forward speed of 2.5 knots, and it can operate in sea state 4. Haima-4500 won a first prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award.
Hailong, a 3,500 m deep-sea observation and sampling ROV. This China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association project was launched in 2001 under SJTU, with the institute as a main developer. Hailong has carried out many hydrothermal sulphide sampling and deep-sea biological and extremophile sampling missions, and it received a Ministry of Education first prize and a second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award.
Haixiang-1500, a 1,500 m heavy work-class ROV for deep-water oil and gas maintenance, built under a national science and technology major project during the 12th Five-Year Plan. It has 150 hp of power, a 440 kg payload, about 1,100 kgf of bollard thrust and about 85% domestic content, completed sea trials in September 2015 and passed acceptance in July 2016. It is designed to support work on subsea trees, manifolds and connection systems.
Other systems include the Haima-500 mid-size work-class ROV (500 m), which was used at the Ertan hydropower station in 2016 and for maintenance of the Yellow River crossing tunnel on the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in 2019; the Haima-200 ROV for laying and installing coastal seabed observation networks; a 6,000 m all-electric Haima-series ROV with a modular design; the DT-4000 and DT-6000 deep-towed platforms, which carry multibeam, sub-bottom profiler and USBL equipment; a long-tunnel inspection robot for 300 m water depth, tunnels at least 3 m in diameter and up to 20 km long; and an automated underwater cutting robot for removing offshore platform jackets in water up to 60 m deep. Research prototypes include a 4,000 m smart float that combines Argo float and glider modes, and the Seagull-1 and Seagull-2 underwater gliders.
The institute also makes diving and rescue equipment, including China's first mobile heliox deck decompression chamber, built in 2010, a 120 m mobile heliox open diving bell system, a launch and recovery system with relay station for atmospheric diving suits, and a remote control unit for multi-anchor suction-anchor groups. It produces ROV tooling and components such as underwater cameras, lights, compensators, electronic housings and hydraulic units. Its facilities include a 300 m saturation diving pressure chamber, 120 m mixed-gas diving equipment and multibeam survey systems. Its 302 m saturation diving research set an Asian record at the time.
On the services side, the institute holds more than 30 qualifications, including construction contractor, second-class diving operation, Class A building and municipal engineering supervision and Class B surveying licences. It has worked on nearly 2,000 marine and underwater projects, including technical consulting and inspection for the immersed tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. Other services include offshore construction, long-tunnel inspection and repair, municipal pipe network work, reservoir and dam inspection, maintenance of rescue equipment, and diving training. Certifications listed on its site include high-tech enterprise status, quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management systems, CCS service supplier approval and CNOOC offshore equipment maintenance qualifications.
