TechnipFMC's Schilling Robotics brand (Davis, CA, est. 1985): TITAN 4 and RigMaster manipulators, Atlas/ORION arms and HD, UHD-III and eHD work-class ROVs.
Schilling Robotics is the subsea robotics business and legacy brand of TechnipFMC, supplying manipulator arms, tooling interfaces and work-class remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to offshore operators and ROV contractors worldwide. The company was established in 1985 in Davis, California, entered the deepwater market with manipulator systems, delivered its first manipulator system in 1986 and its first ROV in 2000. Local records name Tyler Schilling and Wes Gerriets as founders; Alstom owned the business from 1992 until it was sold back to Schilling in 2002. FMC Technologies bought a 45 percent stake in Schilling Robotics LLC for 116 million US dollars at the end of 2008 and completed the purchase of the remaining 55 percent in April 2012, at which time Schilling had offices in Davis, California; Houston, Texas; and Aberdeen, Scotland. FMC Technologies merged with Technip in 2017 to form TechnipFMC, and the robotics products are now marketed on TechnipFMC's website under the Schilling Robotics name. TechnipFMC continues to recruit assembly technicians in Davis, California.
Manipulators are the brand's best-known products. TechnipFMC states that more than 3,000 Schilling Robotics manipulator systems have been delivered and that they are fitted to nearly every work-class ROV in the world as well as other submersibles. The current range comprises the TITAN 4, a seven-function position-controlled manipulator; the RigMaster, a rugged five-function manipulator; the Atlas 7P and 7R manipulators; the ORION 4R, 7P and 7R manipulators; and the Athena tooling interchange system, a force-compliant arm based on the Atlas whose tool-exchange wrist passes power, communications and control fluids to attached tools. Manipulators are available through a Schilling Robotics lease programme as well as for purchase.
The ROV line consists of the HD work-class ROV (150 hp), the UHD-III (a 250 hp vehicle with 150 hp of auxiliary power and an ISOL-8 pump rated at more than 50 US gallons per minute at 5,000 psi for blowout-preventer intervention) and the eHD hybrid electric ROV. The eHD combines direct-drive electric propulsion with hydraulic work capability while remaining compatible with existing HD tooling and infrastructure. Published indicative specifications for the eHD include depth ratings of 3,000 to 6,000 m, 3,000 kg through-frame lift, dimensions of 2.9 x 1.7 x 2.0 m, 4,100 kg weight in air, 250 to 450 kg payload, 1,250 kgf forward, aft and lateral bollard pull, 4.0 knots forward speed, station keeping within 5 cm and auxiliary hydraulic power of 125 litres per minute at 207 bar. Schilling HD vehicles have been sold to ROV operators including ROVOP, which ordered four HD ROVs, and MODUS, which took delivery of a newbuild HD.
TechnipFMC positions the robotics business as a supplier of intervention systems to nearly every operator of subsea ROVs in the oil and gas industry, with work-class ROVs also used in renewables, military and research work. Support services include a 24/7 technical helpline, dedicated online systems for clients, spares, field service and what the company calls the Schilling Robotics 60-minute service and repair philosophy, delivered through TechnipFMC's global service network.
