RobotX is a RoboNation-run maritime autonomy program combining the Maritime RobotX Challenge, the Virtual RobotX simulator and a biennial forum.
RobotX is a maritime robotics program operated by RoboNation, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2009 as the successor to the AUVSI Foundation. The program organizes university-level competitions and community events focused on autonomous, unmanned, multi-domain vehicles, and its major backers include the Office of Naval Research alongside industry sponsors such as NVIDIA, Siemens, MathWorks, SolidWorks, Blue Robotics and Velodyne Lidar.
The program has three components. The Maritime RobotX Challenge is an international competition in which student teams build autonomy systems for the WAM-V surface vessel platform and run navigation, perception and mission tasks on open water; the 2026 edition is hosted in Singapore in collaboration with the National University of Singapore and Singapore's Ministry of Defence. Virtual RobotX (VRX) is a free, open-source simulation environment for autonomous surface vehicles developed with Open Robotics, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Office of Naval Research, used by teams to test software before physical deployment. The RobotX Interactive Forum, launched in 2017, is a biennial gathering of students, researchers, government officials and industry on autonomous maritime systems.
RoboNation states that its portfolio of more than nine student competitions and programs, including SeaPerch, RoboBoat and RoboSub, reaches over 250,000 students per year. The RobotX community also maintains a Discord server with technical and career channels.
