EU Horizon 2020 research project developing robotics and autonomous systems for ship inspection.
ROBINS (ROBotics technology for INspection of Ships) is a collaborative research project co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme (Grant Agreement No. 779776). Launched in January 2018 and coordinated by RINA Services S.p.A., the project brings together partners from robotics, software, marine industry, classification societies, and academia. ROBINS focuses on filling technology and regulatory gaps that hinder adoption of autonomous systems in ship inspection activities.
The project develops aerial drones for visual inspection tasks and crawler robots for thickness measurement and close-up investigations. Key research areas include sensing and probing in confined spaces, navigation and positioning in hazardous environments, and defining regulatory frameworks for robotic inspection of ships.
