Company Overview

Remote Ocean Systems (ROS) is a San Diego, California manufacturer of cameras, lights, pan-and-tilt positioners, controllers and complete inspection systems for subsea, nuclear and military work. Since 1975 it has supplied rugged imaging and positioning equipment for deep-water ROV, research and oil and gas markets, nuclear fuel and reactor inspection, and military programs, and it states that all its products are made in the USA.

The company's headquarters at 9581 Ridgehaven Court is a 28,000 sq ft research and manufacturing facility. It houses a machine shop, a hydrostatic pressure test tank, electronics laboratories, computer modelling and prototyping systems, and environmental test chambers. ROS lists staff expertise in video engineering, mechanical design, reliability engineering, EMI resistance and radiation-tolerant design. It offers new product development with customers' engineering teams, repair and service of its lights, positioners and cameras at the San Diego facility, custom cables, and custom tooling to complete turnkey systems. International resellers represent ROS in markets including Brazil, China and Japan.

ROS has three main product lines for subsea and oceanographic work: cameras, lights and positioners.

Cameras:

  • C1000 HD IP: an oceanographic colour camera with 1080p/1080i output, 20x optical zoom, IP, RS-485 and Ethernet control, a titanium or aluminium housing and a 6,000 m depth rating
  • C470 ultra-low-light camera
  • Spectator II colour camera with 30:1 HD zoom
  • C600 HD/SD colour zoom camera
  • CEX-HD shallow-water colour camera
  • C200 miniature colour camera

Lights:

  • SeaStar LED: about 10,000 lumens with flood or spot reflectors, 120 VAC or 24 VDC power, phase-cut or analog/RS-485 dimming, a 6,000 m depth rating, and internals that can be replaced in the field with standard tools
  • SeaStar LP, FP and PAL variants
  • Q-LED II and Q-LED III floodlights, MV-LED II spotlight and the QL-3000 halogen floodlight for legacy systems

Positioners:

  • Accu-positioner: computer-controlled pan and tilt with 0.1 degree accuracy, zero gear backlash, RS-485 networking of up to eight nodes per bus and a 6,000 m oil-filled rating
  • PT25: carries 100 lb (45 kg) with 30-45 ft-lb of torque and is rated to 6,500 m when oil-filled, with aluminium, stainless and titanium housings
  • PT10, PT10-SS and P20 pan-and-tilt units, the R10 computer-controlled rotator, and the R25 and ATLAS heavy-duty rotators
  • PathFinder: a heavy-duty pan and tilt with continuous 360-degree rotation, 100 lb payload, zero backlash and 0.1 degree accuracy, which ROS markets for military applications

ROS cameras, lights and positioners can be combined with cables and controllers into IC-LINK and IP-LINK inspection systems.

The nuclear line serves fuel and reactor visual inspections during outages. It includes the PTZ-R high-radiation camera, PTZ HD and CEX-HD colour cameras, the C200N miniature nuclear camera, HP-LED and HPS pool lights, LED droplights and the L200 LED spotlight. ROS says it has been a supplier of battlefield-ready camera and lighting equipment to the US military and its prime contractors for three decades. Its core marine customers are ROV operators, oceanographic research institutions and offshore oil and gas companies that need deep-rated imaging and precise camera pointing.
