Planys Technologies is an IIT Madras-incubated deep tech company founded in June 2015 by Tanuj Jhunjhunwala, Vineet Upadhyay, Rakesh Sirikonda, Prof. Prabhu Rajagopal, and Prof. Krishnan Balasubramaniam. Headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Planys is India's first indigenous manufacturer of compact Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for underwater inspection and survey.
The company's origins trace to 2012 when IIT Madras students competed in the international autonomous underwater robotics (AUV) competition in San Diego. Planys designs and builds compact ROVs — including models Beluga and Orca — that are deployed for underwater visual inspection, ultrasonic testing (UT), sonar surveys, and corrosion monitoring of bridges, dams, ports, ships, oil and gas pipelines, and other critical maritime and civil infrastructure.
Planys integrates advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, AI-powered data analytics, and digital reporting dashboards into its inspection workflow. The company also develops Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) capabilities for remote asset monitoring. It serves oil and gas, defence, ports, shipping, and civil infrastructure sectors across India and internationally.
As of 2025, Planys has raised approximately $21.4 million in funding over 10 rounds and has expanded into the defence segment with a dedicated arm for naval and national security applications. The company continues to indigenously develop its ROV hardware and software stack from its Chennai facility.
