Company Overview

Outland Technology, Inc. is a privately owned, family-operated US manufacturer of inspection-class remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and commercial diving video equipment, based in Slidell, Louisiana. The company says it has built rugged subsea technology since 1984. Design, engineering, CNC machining, assembly and testing are done in-house, which Outland credits for short lead times and tight quality control. Outland says the product line was developed from actual field experience. It covers two families: ROVs, and commercial dive video and lighting systems.

ROV fleet:

  • ROV-3000: the largest current vehicle. It has six 1 HP direct-drive brushless DC thrusters (30 lb maximum thrust each) with tool-free quick-release connectors and mission-configurable thruster layouts. Auto depth, heading and pitch are standard, and it is rated to 2,000 ft (600 m). A front UWC-360 dual HD camera with built-in scaling lasers, a rear fixed HD camera and two UWL-505 LED lights (10,000 lumens total) are fitted. The open frame with T-slot rails takes tooling and skids. Topside is the CON-1700 console with a sunlight-readable 18.5 in monitor and up to 3,500 W output at 400 VDC, connected through a 14 mm, 150 m neutrally buoyant tether.
  • ROV-1500: a smaller, more portable vehicle, also rated to 2,000 ft (600 m), with auto depth, heading and pitch.
  • ROV-500 "Squirt": the company's most compact vehicle. Console and power supply fit in a single briefcase, and brushless flooded thrusters give a high thrust-to-weight ratio. Outland calls it the smallest topside-powered ROV on the market.
  • Legacy vehicles: ROV-1000, ROV-2000 and ROV-2500, the last of which added a lateral thruster.

Options listed on the product pages include the MP-050 single-function and MP-200 two-function manipulators, the CP-100 contact/proximity cathodic-protection probe, and UWG-series underwater grinders and wire brushes. RL-500 to RL-2000 cable reels and spares kits are also offered. Outland integrates third-party sensors on its frames: Tritech Gemini 1200ik multibeam imaging sonar, Cerulean Omniscan 450 FS scanning sonar, Sonoptix ECHO, Water Linked DVL A50 and A125 Doppler velocity logs, and Impact Subsea flooded-member detection. Prices for vehicles, tools and spares are published on the company's online store.

Custom work is a large share of the ROV business. Outland reports that nearly every ROV it delivers has a unique setup. One example is an ROV-3000 with a tilting Vaarst SubSLAM X2 photogrammetry skid driven by an MP-100 manipulator, which the company says took about four weeks from concept to delivery. Another ROV-3000 carried an Impact Subsea ISA500 flooded-member detector, a Blueprint Oculus M750D multibeam, a CP probe, a DVL and a grinder all at once. An ROV-500 was built with a top-side camera and a 360-degree pipe-profiling sonar for culverts and pipes.

Dive products include the UWS-3510 and UWS-3710 HD diver video systems in single, dual and quad configurations, and CON-3500, CON-3700 and CON-3250 consoles. The camera range runs from the UWC-325 and UWC-330 fixed cameras to the UWC-575 zoom, UWC-184 pan-tilt-zoom and UWC-610 IP camera. Lights include the UWL-400 and UWL-455 LED lights, the UWL-600 deep-water light and the UWL-850 depth-perception laser. The range is completed by control units, umbilical cables and the OTI-1080-4NX four-channel HD DVR.

Outland lists its markets as offshore, inland infrastructure, government and defense, search and recovery, science and research, aquaculture, and film and documentary production. It sells directly from Slidell and through dealers including ADS Inc., Amron International, Aqua Air Industries, Divers Supply and Dive Commercial International in the US. Abroad it uses Divers World in Canada, dealers in the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK, and representatives in China and Hong Kong. Vehicles carry a limited one-year warranty.
