iRobot Corporation was founded in 1990 by MIT roboticists Rodney Brooks, Colin Angle, and Helen Greiner, and is headquartered at 8 Crosby Drive, Bedford, Massachusetts. The company pioneered practical autonomous robots with the introduction of the Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner in 2002, which became the world's best-selling consumer robot. Its defense and government division produced the PackBot, a man-portable tactical robot deployed for explosive ordnance disposal and reconnaissance, with initial development supported by a DARPA research contract awarded in 1998.

At its peak iRobot operated across consumer home cleaning and military segments. Amazon announced an acquisition agreement valued at approximately $1.7 billion in 2022, but the deal was terminated in January 2024 following opposition from EU and US antitrust regulators. Following the failed acquisition, iRobot underwent significant restructuring, laying off approximately 31% of its workforce.

The company filed for bankruptcy in December 2025 and was subsequently acquired by Shenzhen Picea Robotics.
