The Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) is a nonprofit research institute headquartered in Pensacola, Florida, founded in 1990 by Kenneth M. Ford, Alberto Canas, and Bruce Dunn on the University of West Florida campus. Florida's legislature designated it an independent statewide research institute within the State University System of Florida in 2004.
IHMC organizes its work across three areas: artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics and exoskeletons, and healthspan, resilience and performance. Its robotics team built the Atlas-based entry that placed second in the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge, then developed the Nadia humanoid, shown performing ping-pong and boxing demonstrations, followed by the Alex humanoid, funded by the Office of Naval Research for extreme-environment military and disaster-response tasks. On the exoskeleton side, IHMC built the fourth-generation Mina V2 lower-limb device and the Quix mobility platform, used by paralyzed pilots to compete and win medals in the 2016 and 2020 Cybathlon exoskeleton races.
The institute employs more than 120 researchers and staff and draws funding from DARPA, NASA, NSF, NIH, and the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with corporate partners such as IBM, Microsoft, Honda, and Boeing. In 2024 it opened a 40 million dollar Healthspan, Resilience and Performance research complex in Pensacola.
