"Intelligent Machines Building Humanity's Future"
Austin maker (est. 2017) of robotic 3D construction printers (Vulcan, Phoenix, Titan) and BuildOS software, also developing lunar construction with NASA.
ICON Technology, Inc. is a construction technology company based in Austin, Texas, that develops robotic 3D printing systems, materials and software for building homes and other structures, and that works with NASA and US defense agencies on construction systems for the Moon and for military facilities. The company was founded in 2017 by Jason Ballard, Evan Loomis and Alexander Le Roux.
ICON's first printer, Vulcan, debuted at SXSW in 2018 and printed single-story houses; Vulcan II followed in 2019 as a commercial construction printer about 8.5 ft high and 28 ft wide. In March 2024 the company announced Phoenix, a multi-story printer built around a robotic arm that can also print foundations and roofs. In March 2026 ICON commercially launched Titan, a multi-story robotic construction system. According to ICON, Titan can print the wall system of a 2,500 sq ft home in under seven days at about USD 20 per sq ft, starts up in under an hour with two technicians, and is sold as a package with a pump, BuildOS software access, on-site training at ICON's Austin factory and a three-year warranty. BuildOS is ICON's proprietary software that manages tool paths, robotics, material flow and environmental inputs during printing; CODEX is its library of ready-to-build designs.
Notable projects include a 50-home community for families in extreme poverty in Tabasco, Mexico (first home unveiled December 2019), a community of 3D-printed homes with Lennar in Georgetown, Texas (construction started December 2022), and Mars Dune Alpha, a simulated Mars habitat printed in 2021 for NASA's CHAPEA analog missions at Johnson Space Center as a subcontractor to Jacobs. In 2026 the US Army awarded ICON a USD 62.8 million production agreement for 3D-printed barracks at Fort Bliss and a USD 67.9 million agreement for billeting at Fort Polk.
ICON's space work began in October 2020 with NASA-backed SBIR funding that launched Project Olympus, an off-world construction system using lunar regolith. In November 2022 NASA awarded ICON a USD 57.2 million SBIR Phase III contract to develop a lunar surface construction system for landing pads, habitats and roads. DARPA selected ICON for its LunA-10 lunar architecture study in December 2023, and ICON's Duneflow experiment, developed with NASA Marshall's MMPACT project, flew on a Blue Origin flight in February 2025. In April 2026 the company formed ICON Prime, a government division for military, intelligence and space work led by former US congressman Will Hurd.
ICON raised a USD 9 million seed round (2018), a USD 35 million Series A led by Moderne Ventures (2020), a USD 207 million Series B led by Norwest Venture Partners (2021) and a USD 185 million Series B extension led by Tiger Global (2022).
