Carbon is a privately held, venture-backed additive manufacturing company headquartered in Redwood City, California. It was founded in 2013 by Joseph DeSimone, Philip DeSimone, Steve Nelson, Ed Samulski, Alex Ermoshkin and Nikita Ermoshkin; its board includes investors from Sequoia Capital and Silver Lake.
The platform is built on Digital Light Synthesis (DLS), a continuous photopolymer process. The printer family comprises the M2 and M3 (189 x 118 x 326 mm build volume, 75 micron XY pixel), the M3 Max (307 x 163 x 305 mm with a 4K light engine) and the large-format L1 (410 x 256 x 460 mm, 160 micron XY), all with selectable 25, 50 or 100 micron layers. Printers are supplied on subscription with Printer OS software that receives over-the-air updates roughly every eight weeks. Materials span rigid and elastomeric dual-cure engineering resins, including flame-retardant EPX 86FR and USP Class VI EPX 150, plus dental resins. Design Engine software generates conformal lattices and the AO Suite automates part handling and washing.
Carbon holds ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485 and IATF 16949 certification, is ITAR capable and FDA registered, and serves customers in 17 countries across automotive, industrial, medtech, dental and consumer markets. Published applications include adidas 4DFWD midsoles, Specialized saddles and Riddell helmet liners.
