"Clean fields every time, with maximum herbicide savings."
Cologne-based Bosch-BASF joint venture behind ONE SMART SPRAY, a boom-camera system that detects weeds and switches nozzles to spray only weeds.
Bosch BASF Smart Farming GmbH, trading as ONE SMART SPRAY, is a joint venture between Bosch and BASF that develops and supplies camera-based selective herbicide spraying technology for agricultural field sprayers. The two groups signed the joint venture agreement in November 2020, and the company was established in 2021 under the name Smart Spraying Solution before adopting the ONE SMART SPRAY brand in April 2023. The registered office is Im Zollhafen 24 in Cologne, Germany (Amtsgericht Koeln, HRB 106458), and the managing directors listed in the legal notice are Pavlo Ilyin and Jesko Wolff.
The division of work between the parents is explicit: Bosch contributes hardware, software and connectivity, including the cameras, lighting and weed identification software, while BASF contributes digital and agronomic expertise through its xarvio digital farming platform, which integrates camera data with field records to set the application strategy.
The system uses multiple cameras mounted along the sprayer boom to detect weeds in real time and switch individual nozzles so that herbicide is applied only where weeds are present. It handles both green-on-brown detection (weeds on bare soil, pre-emergence) and green-on-green detection (weeds within a growing crop, post-emergence). LED lighting allows spraying by day and night, and the company states an application accuracy of more than 95%. Operators can adjust detection sensitivity to balance weed control against herbicide savings. Approved crops are corn, soy, cotton, sunflower, canola and sugar beet. The system is built into the sprayer at the factory rather than retrofitted.
The xarvio ONE SMART SPRAY module turns camera data into digital weed maps, tracks input and cost savings in real time and generates automated application reports.
Commercial distribution runs through sprayer manufacturers. In May 2023 BASF announced an agreement with CNH Industrial for Case IH and New Holland sprayers to offer the technology, and trade press reported further agreements with AGCO, Dammann, Amazone and Stara. Early field trials in 2021 used an Amazone 36 m trailed sprayer with spot-spraying nozzles at 25 cm spacing, working at up to 12 km/h, with reported herbicide savings of up to 90%.
The company also takes part in an EU LIFE Programme research project on selective spraying and herbicide sustainability, and its website is published in English, German, French, Hungarian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish, reflecting its target markets in Europe and South America.
