Barcelona medical-device startup founded 2018; CE-marked ABLE Exoskeleton for neurorehabilitation gait therapy, used by 500+ patients in Europe.
ABLE Human Motion S.L. is a Barcelona-based medical device company that designs, manufactures, sells, and maintains robotic exoskeletons to improve mobility, health, and quality of life for people with physical disabilities. The company was founded in October 2018 by two engineering classmates — Alfons Carnicero and Alex Garcia — and a UPC mechanical engineering professor, Josep M. Font, based on research developed at the Biomechanical Engineering Laboratory of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). In 2019 the founders raised €704,000 from business angels, seed funds, and friends and family.
The company's headquarters and production facility are located at the Parc Tecnològic Barcelona Activa, Carrer Marie Curie 8-14, 08042 Barcelona. Facilities include a fully equipped R&D workshop for mechatronic prototyping, a quality-controlled production area for assembly and repair, laboratory equipment for objective data capture, and office space.
The flagship product is the ABLE Exoskeleton — described as the lightest hip-and-knee robotic exoskeleton for neurorehabilitation in Europe. It features adjustable sizing without tools (via pin adjustment), magnetic clip textile straps adjustable with one hand, autonomous transfer from wheelchair using a "yoga-leg" procedure, and donning time under 6 minutes. Motor assistance is adjustable by joint and gait phase. The exoskeleton is indicated for patients 150–190 cm tall weighing up to 100 kg, with spinal cord injury (C5–L5), multiple sclerosis (EDSS up to 8.5), or neuromuscular diseases causing gait alterations.
The ABLE Exoskeleton received CE marking as a medical device in 2024. Prior milestones include ISO 13485 certification (implemented 2021, certified by British Standards Institution / BSI) and clinical trials at Hospital Asepeyo (Barcelona), Institut Guttmann, and Heidelberg University Hospital. By 2023 the device had assisted over 200 patients in walking more than 400,000 steps; as of publication it has helped 500+ individuals accumulate over 2,000,000 steps. Clinical results demonstrating improvements in gait training tolerance, motor function, and quality of life have been published in peer-reviewed journals.
ABLE Human Motion is a member of IISART (International Industry Society in Advanced Rehabilitation Technology) and has received support from MIT, EIT Health, Banco Sabadell BStartup, and Spanish government Next Generation / Kit Digital funding.
