Tesla Launches Steering-Wheel-Free Cybercabs in Austin for Autonomous Ride-Hailing

Tesla has rolled out dozens of its Cybercabs on public roads in Austin, Texas, advancing its autonomous ride-hailing initiative. These gold-colored vehicles are designed without steering wheels or brake pedals, eliminating manual control for passengers. This deployment aims to test both the technology and rider trust in fully autonomous vehicles. The significance of this rollout lies in Tesla's commitment to fully autonomous transportation, as it has operated a self-driving robotaxi service in Austin since June 2025. The new Cybercabs represent a significant evolution, being purpose-built for autonomy without conventional controls. This move also highlights Tesla's innovation, as the Cybercab motor is designed without rare earth metals while maintaining the same range. Looking ahead, Tesla plans to expand its robotaxi service to additional cities, with over 200 unsupervised robotaxis already in operation across Texas and Florida. However, Tesla faces competition from Waymo, which has a larger fleet of driverless vehicles. The key challenge for Tesla will be demonstrating the safety and reliability of its autonomous driving technology without human intervention.
