XOCEAN is an Irish company, founded in 2017 by James Ives, that collects ocean data with uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) and sells it as a service. It designs and manufactures its USVs at the XOCEAN Rathcor Technical Centre in County Louth, controls them from its operations centre in Dundalk, and runs a second technical centre in Springvale, near Melbourne, Australia. It also has offices in the UK, US, Canada and Norway, and employs more than 240 staff.
The company's survey-class USVs are operated remotely over the horizon around the clock, using a hybrid power system, satellite communications and industrial-grade sensors. XOCEAN describes the fleet as the world's largest of survey-class USVs and states that its vessels emit about 0.1% of the CO2 of traditional crewed survey vessels. The USVs hold MCA Category 0 certification. Typical payloads and data sets include multibeam echosounder, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler, magnetometer and USBL positioning.
Services cover offshore wind, geophysical survey, environmental monitoring, asset integrity, bathymetry and fisheries. Customers can buy data through a Direct model, with fixed-price acquisition, processing and reporting for a specific project, or license existing data from the XOCEAN Data Library. The company reports operations in 23 jurisdictions, support for 48.6 GW of offshore wind projects and more than 4.9 million gigabytes of data collected. Named partners include SSE Renewables, Orsted, bp and Shell.
In early 2025 XOCEAN raised EUR 115 million from S2G Ventures, Climate Investment, Morgan Stanley's 1GT climate fund and CC Industries to expand its fleet and data platform.
