VRC Metal Systems is a US manufacturer of high-pressure cold spray equipment headquartered in Box Elder, South Dakota. Rob Hrabe and Dr. Christian Widener founded the company in 2013 after developing a portable cold spray system with the US Army Research Laboratory for field repair of military hardware; about 20 percent of its workforce are military veterans, and VRC was named Veteran-Owned Business of the Year in 2020. VRC acquired HF Webster Engineering Services, an aerospace repair firm Hrabe founded in 2007, in 2018.
Cold spray, or supersonic particle deposition, accelerates fine metal powder through a nozzle using heated, high-pressure gas so particles bond to a surface on impact by plastic deformation rather than melting, avoiding heat-affected zones tied to welding. VRC's line includes the Gen IV system for automated deposition, the portable Raptor and lighter Dragonfly units for field repair, the trailer-mounted Brolga series, and the C.A.M.P. Site mobile unit. Its Subtractive and Additive Manufacturing Process (SAMP) combines cold spray with CNC machining on one platform for dimensional restoration and corrosion-resistant coating.
VRC holds AS9100 certification and supplies equipment, installation, and operator training for Defense Department sustainment programs and for aerospace, maritime, energy, automotive, and heavy-equipment repair without the heat exposure of welding.
