Company Overview

Voyis Imaging Inc. is a Canadian developer and manufacturer of underwater optical sensors: dynamic laser scanners, stills imaging systems, stereo cameras and complete optical payloads for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The company is headquartered at 120 Randall Drive in Waterloo, Ontario, describes its products as made in Canada, and displays an ISO 9001 certification mark on its website. LinkedIn lists the company at 11-50 employees.

The business was founded in 2007 as 2G Robotics, which is credited with commercialising the first subsea dynamic laser scanner. Sonardyne International acquired 2G Robotics in early 2020, and in June 2021 the company rebranded as Voyis Imaging Inc. under CEO Chris Gilson, previously its lead mechanical engineer and product development manager. Sonardyne's parent, later renamed Covelya Group Limited, held Voyis alongside Sonardyne, EIVA, Forcys, Wavefront Systems and Chelsea Technologies. In March 2026 Kraken Robotics announced an agreement to acquire Covelya for approximately CAD 615 million in cash and shares, and the deal closed on 2 July 2026. Voyis now presents itself as part of Kraken Robotics.

The Insight laser scanner family covers short to long ranges. Insight Pro is a long-range dynamic scanner with a 1.5 to 15 m scan range, a profile rate of up to 90 Hz, 2,048 points per line, a 50 degree laser line, a Class 3B 448 nm laser, an actively cooled sensor and 4,000 m or 6,000 m depth ratings, with output in XYZ and LAS formats. Insight Micro is a compact dynamic scanner for small vehicles that draws under 50 W, offers 0.7 to 5.0 m (SR) or 1.0 to 7.0 m (XR) ranges, scans at up to 100 Hz in laser-only mode with 2,464 points per line, and can carry an integrated stills camera. Insight Nano is a stationary scanner with an integrated precision actuator for continuous 360 degree scans of pipes, flume tanks and other confined spaces, with 0.13 to 1 m or 0.36 to 2.5 m ranges, a 1,000 m depth rating and factory calibration for use in air or water.

Observer imaging systems target wide-area optical survey. The Observer Survey Series Pro pairs a cooled 5.5 MP (2560 x 2160) 16-bit camera with two Nova LED panels totalling 700,000 lumens, images out to 10 m, is rated to 6,000 m and captures blur-free stills at vehicle speeds of up to 6 knots, with onboard machine-learning colour correction. Survey Series Micro and Vision Series variants complete the range. The Discovery Stereo line provides smart ROV cameras: the Perception Series combines a 4.4 MP colour sensor at 30 fps, a 110 x 93 degree field of view, a 0.1 to 5.0 m operating range, 300 m or 3,000 m depth ratings, integrated Nova Mini lights of up to 125,000 lumens, an IMU, an SDK and visual SLAM powered by EIVA NaviSuite for real-time 3D reconstruction.

For AUVs, the Recon and Recon LS payloads retrofit vehicles with optical sensing. Recon LS interlaces dynamic laser data (1.2 to 7 m range, 2,464 points per line) with 5 MP or 12 MP stills and is integrated with the L3Harris IVER4 and HII REMUS 100, 300 and 600, with custom integration offered for 9 to 12 inch AUVs. Voyis states that its laser scanners have been used on AUVs since 2013 to model more than 10,000 km of seabed and pipeline. For ROVs, Small ROV skids and rental XL ROV skids pre-integrate scanners and cameras with a co-located INS and DVL. All systems run on the ViewLS software with an included C++ API.

Published vehicle integrations include the VideoRay Defender, Saab Falcon and Cougar, Deep Trekker REVOLUTION and PIVOT, Blue Robotics BlueROV, HII REMUS 300, Eddyfi Versatrax crawler and Oceaneering Freedom. Target markets are offshore energy inspection, ocean science, defence (including mine countermeasures), civil infrastructure and aquaculture. Voyis also sells services: Voyis Academy training, Voyis Protect maintenance with health checks, calibration and repair support, and Voyis Support consultation and data processing.
