VMA Gesellschaft für visuelle Messtechnik und Automatisierung mbH is a German specialist manufacturer of optical, non-contact measurement technology for the glass industry. The company is headquartered at Gräfinauer Str. 2, 98693 Ilmenau, Thuringia, Germany, and is registered at the District Court of Jena under HRB 300896.
VMA was founded in December 1990 by former employees of the R&D department of Technisches Glas Ilmenau following German reunification, making it one of the earliest post-reunification technology spin-offs from the Thuringian optical and glass industry. The company's headquarters building was officially inaugurated in 1994 after construction at high personal and financial risk.
The company's core competency is the development, design, construction, and commissioning of hardware and software for visual measurement instruments, automation systems, and handling systems specifically designed for glass manufacturing quality control. VMA pioneered non-contact wall thickness measurement for all three major glass segments:
- Glass tubing: the original focus area from the early 1990s
- Flat glass: expanded into thickness measurement from the mid-1990s
- Container glass: first company to achieve non-contact wall thickness measurement of container glass at production speeds in the early 2000s
In 2009, the company entered a new management chapter under Nico Thomae and Fred Vogler, who took over as Managing Directors. Key product lines include the FLX system, multi-level sensors, laboratory measuring devices, piping measuring technology, and modernized flat glass thickness measurement systems. The company extended its facilities in 2008 and again in 2016, adding a dedicated optical and installation space.
Today VMA employs approximately 20 people across service, development engineering, software development, mechatronics, purchasing, and project management. The company participates in glasstec (the international glass industry trade fair in Düsseldorf) and cooperates with universities and research institutions in Thuringia.
