Hefei research university founded 1958 in Beijing by the Chinese Academy of Sciences; runs robotics labs behind the Xiao Lai robotic chemists.
The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a public research university founded in Beijing in September 1958 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The university relocated to Hefei, Anhui province, in 1970 during the Cultural Revolution, and remains co-funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Education, and the Anhui provincial government.
USTC's School of Information Science and Technology hosts robotics and artificial intelligence research groups, including development of the autonomous robotic chemists Xiao Lai and Xiao Lin, systems that plan and run chemistry experiments without a human operator and can work around the clock, alongside separate humanoid robot research activity at the university. USTC researchers have also built the Zuchongzhi superconducting quantum processors and contributed to the LHAASO cosmic-ray observatory, work that draws on the same campus base of physics, materials, and control engineering that supports its robotics labs.
USTC is one of the research universities administered directly by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is based in Hefei, a city the Chinese government has designated as a national comprehensive science center.
