The Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is a research facility within the College of Engineering, based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The lab focuses on the design, development, and testing of unmanned and autonomous vehicle systems operating across aerial, surface, and subsea domains, with particular emphasis on the unique research opportunities afforded by Hawaii's location in the Pacific Ocean.
Research areas include unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), and multi-domain autonomous platforms. The lab's geographic position enables real-world oceanic testing environments that are uncommon among continental US institutions, supporting research in marine autonomous navigation, underwater acoustic communications, and littoral zone robotics.
The University of Hawaii College of Engineering hosts multiple affiliated robotics and autonomous systems groups. Team Kanaloa, the RIP Lab's Unmanned X Systems group, focuses on sensor fusion-based localisation, SLAM, obstacle avoidance, manipulation, swarm robotics, and autonomous multi-objective decision-making for aerial, surface, and underwater platforms. The RAN Lab, founded in 2018, conducts research in GPS-denied localisation for mobile robots and decentralised multi-robot control under background flow disturbances, with experience in AUV prototyping and visual guidance. The RoSE Lab (Robotic Space Exploration) addresses robotic autonomy, mobility, manipulation, and life detection for planetary applications.
The ASL's work contributes to national priorities in ocean science, maritime security, and aerospace, and benefits from collaboration with agencies including the US Navy, NOAA, and NASA. Hawaii's position as a gateway to the Pacific makes the lab strategically significant for research in maritime and island-chain autonomous logistics.
