Toyota joint program with JAXA to develop a pressurized crewed lunar rover using hydrogen fuel-cell technology for the Artemis program.
Toyota Motor Corporation, founded in 1937 and headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi, Japan, is the world largest automobile manufacturer. Through its Lunar Cruiser project, Toyota partners with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) to develop a pressurized crewed lunar rover for the US-led Artemis program, targeting a 2029 launch. Named after Toyota iconic Land Cruiser, the rover is 6 meters long, 5.2 meters wide, and 3.8 meters high, providing a 7-square-meter pressurized cabin that allows astronauts to live and work without spacesuits for missions lasting up to 30 to 45 days.
The powertrain uses hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle technology co-developed with Mitsubishi for the electrolysis unit and Bridgestone for metal tyres suited to the lunar vacuum. The Lunar Cruiser represents Toyota extension of mobility engineering to extreme extraterrestrial environments.
