Company Overview

Third Wave Automation (TWA) is an American robotics company founded in 2018 by Julian Mason, James Davidson, and Arshan Poursohi, and headquartered in Union City, California. The company develops autonomous forklift systems and fleet management software for warehouse and distribution center operations, enabling material handling processes to run with greater safety, efficiency, and throughput.

Third Wave Automation's core product, the TWA Reach, is a high-reach autonomous forklift truck capable of operating in four distinct modes: fully autonomous, remote operation, remote assist, and manual. This multi-modal flexibility, branded the Shared Autonomy Platform, is central to the company's proposition. Rather than requiring complete automation from day one, TWA's system allows human remote operators to monitor and intervene across multiple forklifts simultaneously, handling exceptions or edge cases that the autonomous system cannot address alone. This approach enables faster deployment in real-world warehouse environments without needing fully mapped or highly structured facilities.

The TWA Reach supports load capacities of up to 1,800 kg (approximately 4,000 lbs) and can reach heights of up to 9.3 meters (366 inches), matching the range of conventional reach truck applications. The vehicle is equipped with 3D LiDAR, camera arrays, and sensor fusion for safe navigation in active warehouse aisles as narrow as 10 feet.

Complementing the forklift hardware is the ArmadaFMS (Armada Fleet Management System), a software platform that provides fleet-wide visibility and control, integrates with existing Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), enables dynamic zone configuration, and tracks operational KPIs in real time. A single remote operator can oversee and manage multiple autonomous forklifts through the ArmadaFMS console.

The company announced a technology partnership with The Raymond Corporation in 2025, enabling Third Wave's autonomy stack to be deployed on Raymond lift truck fleets, and closed a $27 million Series C funding round led by Woven Capital, Toyota's growth fund. Total capital raised stands at $97 million. Customers include Holman Logistics, which has deployed TWA autonomous forklifts in multi-client warehouse operations.
