"Innovation in Motors"
Camarillo, CA maker of zero-cogging slotless frameless motor kits (TG, LS, LSO) for gimbals, precision robotics and space; an Allient company since 2022.
ThinGap is a US designer and manufacturer of slotless brushless motor kits based in Camarillo, California. A motor kit is a frameless rotor and stator set that the customer builds directly into its own mechanism, without a housing, shaft or bearings from the motor supplier. This is the format used for direct-drive joints, gimbals and other compact actuators. ThinGap says it has operated for more than twenty years. Engineering, production and operations sit at a single site at 4035 Via Pescador, and the motors are made in the USA. The company supplies standard in-stock models and custom-made or modified designs, and its main customers are OEMs and government agencies that design their own end systems.
Technology. ThinGap's stators use thin, ironless coils with no slots, paired with an optimised permanent-magnet rotor. Because there are no slots or teeth for the magnets to lock onto, the motors have zero cogging and very low torque ripple. This matters wherever smooth, precise low-speed motion is needed, such as pointing systems, haptic devices and robot joints. The company also highlights a high torque-to-weight ratio, a large central aperture for cables, optics or shafts, and a low axial profile, alongside its proprietary modelling and process capabilities.
Product lines. ThinGap publishes three main robot-relevant motor families:
ThinGap also makes a TGR line of motor kits designed for satellite reaction-wheel assemblies. It covers five models, such as the TGR 29-12 and TGR 89-26, with continuous torque of 0.014 to 0.745 N-m in atmosphere and speeds of up to 16,000 rpm. Options and custom or modified windings and form factors are offered across the range.
Markets. ThinGap groups its business into medical, industrial and emerging segments. The acquisition announcement named aerospace, defence and medical as its key markets. Robotics appears in its own application lists as haptic robotics and precision robotics. RobotToday lists it as a frameless-motor source for robot joints and actuators.
Ownership. In May 2022 ThinGap was acquired by Allied Motion Technologies Inc. of Amherst, New York, then traded on Nasdaq as AMOT. Financial terms were not disclosed. Allied Motion has since been renamed Allient Inc., and ThinGap now operates as an Allient brand; the ThinGap website footer links to allient.com.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Low-speed, zero-cogging frameless slotless torque-motor kits with large through hole and low torque ripple, for gimbals, optics and precision robotics.
Lightweight high-speed frameless slotless motor kits used in reaction wheels, pumps and haptic robotics/haptic feedback systems.
Outrunner version of the LS slotless torque motor, rotor turning outside a fixed stator, with a very large through hole for ring-type mechanisms.
