suitX, formerly U.S. Bionics Inc., was founded in 2012 in Emeryville, California, as a spinout from UC Berkeley's Robotics and Human Engineering Laboratory under professor Homayoon Kazerooni. The company designs and manufactures wearable robotic exoskeletons for industrial and medical markets. Its occupational lineup includes three modular devices: backX, which reduces lower-back torque without batteries or electronics; shoulderX, which offloads overhead shoulder load; and legX, which supports the knees during squatting tasks.
All three modules can be worn individually or combined. In the healthcare segment, Phoenix is a lightweight, FDA-cleared powered lower-limb exoskeleton for individuals with spinal cord injuries, weighing 27 lb with a four-hour battery life. suitX products are used in manufacturing, construction, and healthcare rehabilitation settings. In November 2021, German prosthetics and orthotics leader Ottobock acquired suitX to expand its exoskeleton portfolio.
The brand and product line continue to operate under the Ottobock group.
