SubC Imaging builds 4K Rayfin subsea cameras, Aquorea LEDs, lasers and DVR+ recording for ROVs, AUVs, landers and ocean observatories in Newfoundland, Canada.
SubC Imaging is a Canadian designer and manufacturer of subsea imaging equipment and software, headquartered at 327 Memorial Drive in Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. The company was founded in 2010 by Chad Collett, its founder and CEO, together with co-owner Adam Rowe; both are College of the North Atlantic alumni, and the business began as a one-person operation in a basement. SubC describes itself as Canadian owned and operated, states that its products are designed and assembled in Canada, and reports more than 220 clients in over 30 countries. LinkedIn lists the company at 11-50 employees.
The core product line is the Rayfin smart camera family, which records 4K/HD video and high-resolution digital stills, logs tilt, roll and NMEA sensor data, embeds EXIF metadata and can power and control lights and lasers through auxiliary ports. The Rayfin Mk2 Benthic is rated to 6,000 m and integrates with ROVs, AUVs, drop systems and observatories, with internal storage of more than 10 hours of 4K video for battery-powered autonomous deployments. The Rayfin Trench is rated to 11,000 m for hadal landers, AUVs and winch-deployed systems. The Rayfin Coastal and Uplink are 500 m models, and the compact Rayfin Micro 500 m targets observation-class ROVs with Rapid Digital Imaging, strobe-synchronised stills, live 4K/HD video and 10x digital zoom. A built-in no-code script builder automates time-lapse capture, lighting and sensor triggers. The earlier 1Cam Mk6, a titanium 4K/HD 20x optical-zoom camera with a sapphire port, remains available as a legacy model and for rental.
Lighting and measurement products include the Aquorea Mk3 LED, which works as both lamp (up to 15,000 lumens) and TTL-synchronised strobe (more than 32,000 lumens) at 180 lumens per watt, in 500 m aluminium, 6,000 m titanium and 11 km versions. The MantaRay parallel laser projects two 520 nm green dots for distance and scale out to 5 m, and the Skate Mk2 is a 100 mW Class 3R 520 nm line or grid laser for 3D modelling, machine vision and pipeline inspection. In 2024 SubC said it had become the only provider of FDA-compliant subsea lasers.
Complete systems include the Autonomous Timelapse System for drop frames, baited landers, BRUVs and AUVs, with an optional hibernation mode for deployments lasting months; the Observatory Camera System for cabled seafloor observatories, with up to 1 TB of solid-state storage and the ability to control up to four devices; and Drop and Tow Camera Systems launched in 2026 for seafloor surveys. SubC cameras installed in Barkley Canyon on the Ocean Networks Canada observatory have operated without maintenance since 2014. The custom engineering group designs imaging systems for manned submersibles, ROVs, AUVs, observatories and benthic landers, covering 6G-SDI and GigE signal paths, PCB and firmware design and mechanical simulation.
On the software side, DVR+ records up to six simultaneous video feeds with synchronised audio, overlays GPS, depth and sensor data, supports live event tagging and post-dive review in ReviewStudio, and integrates with inspection platforms such as WOOD NEXUS, AIZE and Coabis. Real-Time Streaming, Blackbox recording, data routing for onshore vehicle control and ship-to-shore audio rooms make up its remote operations offering. Fugro used SubC technology in 2023 for what was described as the first fully remote offshore wind farm inspection, and Ocean Infinity took a SubC DVR system the same year.
Client logos on the company website include Ocean Networks Canada, NOAA, GEOMAR, DFO, KAUST, NATO, WHOI, JAMSTEC, Ifremer, Cefas and KRISO. Target markets are marine research, offshore energy, aquaculture, fisheries and defence. In June 2026 Ocean Robotics International, a Swedish maker of compact and observation-class ROVs, joined SubC's OEM partner network to integrate its cameras, lights, lasers and recording software. SubC also rents equipment and runs a support portal, help centre and RMA repair process. Awards include the Clarenville Chamber of Commerce 2022 Business of the Year and incubator graduate awards from Canadian and US business incubation associations.
