Oslo, Norway agricultural robotics company founded 2016 from a Norwegian University of Life Sciences project; builds the Thorvald UV-C and data robot.
Saga Robotics is a Norwegian agricultural robotics company registered in Oslo, Norway, founded in 2016 by Lars Grimstad and Pal Johan From, following a master's project the pair began at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) in 2014. The company operates commercially through offices in Lincoln and Yalding in the United Kingdom and Paso Robles, California, in addition to its Norwegian base.
The company's product, the Thorvald autonomous robot platform, is a modular ground robot built to work in polytunnels, open fields, and vineyard rows. Thorvald's best-established use is autonomous UV-C light treatment for powdery mildew control in strawberries and grapevines: the robot drives itself at night, applying UV-C light that suppresses fungal disease without chemical fungicide, while onboard cameras collect crop images and count flowers and fruit. Investor backing from 2020 supported the shift from pilot units to commercial-scale deployment.
Saga Robotics reports that its robots have driven more than 300,000 kilometers autonomously, treated roughly 2,500 acres of grapevines in the United States, covered about 30 percent of tabletop strawberry production in the United Kingdom, and applied UV-C treatment across more than one billion strawberry plants, with growers reporting pesticide reductions of 70 to 100 percent on treated crops. More than 150 Thorvald robots are in operation across Norway, the UK, and the US.
