ReconRobotics, Inc. was founded in 2005 to commercialize robotics research conducted at the University of Minnesota's Center for Distributed Robotics under DARPA funding. Headquartered in Edina, Minnesota, the company specializes in tactical micro-robot systems designed for reconnaissance in dangerous environments. Its flagship product, the Throwbot 2 (TB2), is a throwable micro-robot weighing approximately 1.2 lbs that can be thrown up to 120 feet (36 m), withstands repeated 30-foot drops onto concrete, and transmits real-time color video and audio up to 150 feet through walls or 450 feet line-of-sight outdoors.
An integrated infrared illumination system activates automatically in low-light conditions. The companion Operator Control Unit 3 (OCU3) provides a single-joystick and touchscreen interface for reliable field operation. An accessory, the Recon Scout SearchStick, converts the Throwbot 2 into a pole camera extending from 20.5 inches to 72 inches.
Earlier products—the Recon Scout XT and original Throwbot XT—are now classified as legacy platforms. The company has delivered nearly 7,000 robot systems to users including the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, SOCOM, federal agencies (U.S. Marshals, FBI, Border Patrol, ICE, ATF), and more than 800 state and local law enforcement agencies across 33 countries. ReconRobotics has also acquired computer vision company Xollai, LLC to extend its sensing capabilities.
The company continues to receive active government contracts, including a 2024 Phase I SOCOM award for a lightweight tactical ground robot for Special Operations Forces.
