Halifax, Canada drone maker; Spiri Mu ROS quadcopter with NVIDIA Jetson TX2 and PX4 SLAM; delivered to Canadian Armed Forces for counter-UAS and ISR testing.
Pleiades Robotics, operating commercially as Spiri Robotics, is a Canadian autonomous drone company headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The company designs and manufactures programmable unmanned aerial systems intended for research, government, defense, and commercial applications.
The primary product is the Spiri Mu, a quadcopter drone featuring a ducted fan structural design for improved safety and aerodynamic stability. The Spiri Mu is powered by an NVIDIA Jetson TX2 onboard computer with a dual-core Denver 2 and quad-core ARM Cortex-A57 CPU, 256 CUDA cores, and 8 GB of LPDDR4 memory. The platform runs Ubuntu Linux 20.04 and Robot Operating System (ROS), enabling researchers and developers to build custom autonomy software directly on the drone without relying on proprietary APIs. Navigation uses the PX4 flight control system with real-time Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). The Spiri Mu returns autonomously to its inductive charging perch when battery levels are low.
Sensor inputs include accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, GPS, a downward-facing acoustic altitude sensor, a downward-facing optical flow camera, a forward-facing stereo camera, and a forward-facing rangefinder. A USB port accepts additional third-party sensors or compute modules.
Spiri Robotics has delivered Spiri Mu drones to Canadian government clients. In July 2024, the company completed its first shipment of Spiri Mu drones to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), deployed at Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Base Suffield in Alberta for testing in counter-unmanned aerial systems (counter-UAS) and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Canada also procured the Spiri ARC system — drones housed in a converted intermodal shipping container — for testing in surveillance and counter-drone operations between 2023 and 2024.
Early funding included a Kickstarter campaign raising approximately $140,000. The company has research partnerships with Canadian universities and has participated in projects with the European Space Agency.
