Phenix Systems SA was founded on July 1, 2000, in Riom, Auvergne, France (Puy-de-Dôme department), emerging from research on heterogeneous materials conducted at the National School of Industrial Ceramics. The company was registered with the Clermont-Ferrand commercial court (SIREN 432209617) and based at Rue Richard Wagner, Riom 63200.
Phenix Systems designed, manufactured, and sold proprietary direct metal 3D printing systems based on Selective Laser Sintering/Melting (SLS/SLM) technology. The company's machines worked with extremely fine metal and ceramic powders — particles as small as 6 to 9 microns in diameter — to produce chemically pure, fully dense metal parts with high-resolution surface finish that competing powder bed fusion systems of the era could not achieve.
The product range included the PXL (large format), PXM (medium format), PXS (small format), PXS Dental (a dedicated dental prosthetics system for laboratory use), and the PX BOX, an external powder reprocessing module for recovering and recycling unused metal powder. Supported materials included stainless steel, tool steels, non-ferrous alloys (titanium, aluminum, copper), superalloys (nickel-based Inconel), precious metals (gold, platinum for dental and jewelry), and alumina ceramics. These material capabilities served aerospace, automotive, and patient-specific medical device applications including implants and prosthetics.
On June 12, 2013, 3D Systems Corporation (NYSE: DDD) of Rock Hill, South Carolina announced an agreement to acquire 80% of Phenix Systems shares. The acquisition was completed on July 15, 2013, with 3D Systems paying $15.1 million for 81% of the share capital and subsequently acquiring remaining shares via a simplified tender offer process under French Markets Authority (AMF) rules. The acquisition added complementary metal SLS technology to 3D Systems' portfolio, strengthening their selective laser sintering platform, and was described as expected to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings in the first full year post-acquisition.
