US nonprofit (OSRF, est. 2012) that created and maintained ROS and Gazebo; commercial arm acquired by Intrinsic (Alphabet) in Dec 2022.
Open Robotics was the umbrella identity for two related organizations: the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), a California-based nonprofit incorporated in May 2012, and the Open Source Robotics Corporation (OSRC), a for-profit subsidiary created in September 2016. Together they served as the primary stewards of the Robot Operating System (ROS) and the Gazebo simulation platform, which originated at Willow Garage and were released publicly beginning in 2010. In May 2017, OSRF and OSRC jointly adopted the Open Robotics brand.
In December 2022, Intrinsic—a robotics subsidiary of Alphabet (Google's parent)—acquired OSRC and its Singapore entity OSRC-SG; however, OSRF remained an independent nonprofit retaining open-source IP governance of ROS, Gazebo, and Open-RMF. The OSRF was headquartered in Mountain View, California. Following the acquisition, OSRF leadership transitioned to new management (CEO: Vanessa Yamzon Orsi; CTO: Geoffrey Biggs).
In April 2024, the Open Source Robotics Alliance (OSRA) was formed to institutionalize community governance of ROS, Gazebo, and Open-RMF under OSRF's stewardship, providing a sustainable long-term framework for the open-source robotics ecosystem. The Open Robotics commercial entity effectively ceased independent operations after the 2022 Intrinsic acquisition; the OSRF nonprofit continues to operate the openrobotics.org domain, ROS infrastructure, and community governance as of 2026.
