NUADA (Nuada, Lda) is a Portuguese exoskeleton company founded in 2014 and headquartered in Braga, Portugal. The company developed a hand exoskeleton concept through Startup Braga and secured a patent on the core locking mechanism. NUADA develops the Nuada Glove, a wearable powered hand exoskeleton designed to restore or augment grip function for two distinct user groups: people with hand impairments due to neurological or musculoskeletal conditions (rehabilitation and assistive use), and industrial workers performing repetitive static-grip tasks (fatigue prevention).
The device takes the form of a glove and wrist bracelet containing the mechanical actuation system. Its key innovation is a semi-passive locking mechanism using artificial tendons: in its default state the glove allows fully natural finger movement; when the user initiates a grasp, the tendon system locks automatically and maintains the grip without further muscular effort, releasing instantly on demand. The system is controlled via a paired smartwatch app with a single tap.
The Nuada Glove weighs under 300 g, supports grip loads up to 20 kg, and is designed for all-day use on a single charge. A clinical pilot study involving 63 participants with hand disabilities showed 98% of subjects achieved measurable improvement in grip function on at least one standardized exercise. NUADA was selected for the HAX hardware accelerator in Shenzhen in 2016-2017 and has received European Union R&D funding of 1.7 million euros.
The company is backed by SOSV and has raised funding from US investors. NUADA targets CE-marked medical device regulatory approval in EU member states.
