"Smart surface coating for the future of construction"
Swiss ETH Zurich spin-off building an autonomous mobile plastering robot that spray-prints thin coating layers on site; first robots deployed in 2025.
LAYERED GmbH (styled LAYERED) is a Swiss construction robotics start-up developing an autonomous mobile robot that applies plaster and protective surface coatings on building sites. The company was set up in November 2024 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich and is led by co-founders Eliott Sounigo (CEO) and Dr. Selen Ercan Jenny (CSO). It is based at Industriestrasse 19 in Lupfig, in the canton of Aargau, where it also runs a mock-up lab. The wider team includes robotics engineers for control and software, an AI/ML engineer and a UX/UI developer, and the company describes itself as a collective of experts in digital fabrication, robotics, AI, XR and construction.
The robot uses what LAYERED calls spray-based printing-in-motion: instead of a worker spraying and trowelling plaster by hand, the mobile system plans its path and sprays material in multiple thin layers only where and when needed on concrete and masonry elements. The operator controls the robot through an extended-reality interface on a standard iPhone, and the company markets the setup as "plug and spray". Figures published on the website include a robot weight of 120 kg, work about two times faster than conventional methods, 20% material savings and a 75% reduction in dependence on manual labour. In a professional article the CEO also cites up to 20% less construction material waste, an estimated 10-25% reduction in embodied carbon per project phase and less exposure of workers to dust.
LAYERED describes the machine as Switzerland's first autonomous mobile robot for construction surface finishing. According to its Gebert Ruf Stiftung project record, the system has reached technology readiness level 7, was deployed on two Swiss construction sites in October 2025 and on a French site in June 2026, and a first robot series is in production.
The company has so far been financed mainly through non-dilutive programmes. Gebert Ruf Stiftung approved a CHF 150,000 grant in April 2024 (project GRS-009/24, running December 2024 to September 2026), the company received CHF 1.6 million in follow-up financing through Innosuisse, and it has been supported by Venture Kick. Research partners listed on its website include ETH Zurich, SUPSI, ZHAW, NCCR and the Swiss Data Science Center, and supporters include Innosuisse, Hightech Zentrum Aargau, the Canton of Aargau, Halter, Holcim, Maxon, SUHNER and the European Commission.
