Company Overview

IUVO s.r.l. is an Italian wearable robotics company founded in January 2015 as a spin-off of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA) and its BioRobotics Institute in Pisa, Italy. The company was co-founded by Prof. Nicola Vitiello (Associate Professor at SSSA and co-founder of the Wearable Robotics Laboratory), Francesco Giovacchini, Simona Crea, and Andrea Maria Vitiello. IUVO holds an exclusive license from SSSA to commercially exploit patent applications and proprietary know-how covering multiple wearable robotic technologies.

In August 2017, COMAU (a Stellantis N.V. subsidiary and global leader in industrial automation and robotics) and Össur (an Icelandic company and world leader in prosthetics and orthotics) co-invested in IUVO through a joint venture holding a majority share. The strategic rationale was to accelerate commercial adoption of wearable robotic technologies in both industrial and daily-life applications. The current CEO is Duilio Amico (senior manager from COMAU) and the CFO is Tiziano Becchi. The company is based in Pontedera (Pisa), Italy, at the Comau HUMANufacturing Innovation Center.

IUVO's product portfolio includes two primary devices:

  1. Passive spring-loaded upper-limb exoskeleton: designed to reduce physical effort for workers performing overhead or elevated-arm tasks. The device uses spring-loaded mechanisms requiring no battery power to counteract gravitational load on arms and shoulders.
  2. Active Pelvis Orthosis (APO): a powered pelvis-level orthosis originally developed at SSSA and licensed to IUVO, designed to support the gait of patients with neurological impairment or lower-limb deficits.

IUVO has participated in multiple European Commission Horizon 2020 research programs including: CYBERLEGs Plus Plus (robotic ortho-prosthesis for transfemoral amputees), HUMAN (worker-automation coexistence), INBOTS (responsible robotics community), EUROBENCH (European exoskeleton benchmarking framework), ReHyb (hybrid upper-limb exoskeleton for post-stroke rehabilitation), CONBOTS (sensorimotor learning via robotic platforms), SHERLOCK (human-robot collaboration in manufacturing), and Mari4_YARD (exoskeletons for SME shipyard workers).

Application domains span industrial manufacturing (worker fatigue reduction), healthcare and rehabilitation (post-stroke upper limb and gait recovery), and special environments such as shipyards.
