The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a public research foundation established by the Italian government in 2003, with operations beginning in 2005. Headquartered in Genoa, it focuses on robotics, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, nanotechnology, and drug discovery. IIT's robotics research spans humanoid robotics, legged locomotion, neuro-robotics, and dexterous manipulation.
Flagship robotic platforms include the iCub humanoid child-like robot and the HyQ hydraulic quadruped. With over 1,900 researchers from more than 60 countries and approximately 90 million euros in annual government funding, IIT operates a 25,000 sqm facility in Genoa alongside satellite labs across Italy and internationally. IIT actively spins out technology ventures and collaborates with industry and academia globally.
