Port Coquitlam, Canada sonar maker since 1988: Delta T multibeam, YellowFin/BlackFin sidescan, scanning sonars, altimeters and AUV sonar kits.
Imagenex Technology Corp. is a Canadian designer and manufacturer of underwater sonar systems based in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. The company was founded in 1988 by engineers involved in the early development of high-resolution imaging and profiling sonar, and within two years it shipped its first product: an imaging sonar head about the size of a coffee mug, rated to 300 m, for the commercial underwater industry. Later milestones listed by the company include what it describes as the industry's first digital colour imaging sonar that could be operated from a computer without a dedicated processor (1995), a low-cost sidescan sonar (2000), and the Delta T family of compact multibeam sonars offered in obstacle-avoidance or profiling configurations with depth ratings up to 6,000 m. Marine Technology Reporter profiles in 2013 and 2014 named Willy Wilhelmsen as president and put headcount at about 25.
Imagenex sonars are fitted to remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), towfish, crawlers and small survey boats. The catalogue covers five groups.
Multibeam: the 837 Delta T series, including the 837AXi (165 kHz, 120 x 10 degree obstacle-avoidance multibeam rated to 6,000 m, more than 20 frames per second) and 837BXi profiling units at 260 kHz in 300 m and 1,000 m housings; the 965A multibeam imaging sonar (675 kHz or 1.1 MHz, 120 x 20 degree field of view, 120 to 480 beams, up to 40 frames per second, 1,000 m and 2,000 m versions); the DT101Xi and DT102Xi multibeam echo sounders; and the DT360 and DT360Xi 360-degree units. The DT102Xi combines a 675 kHz, 180-degree swath sonar with an internal OEM motion reference unit and an OEM AML Micro-X sound velocity sensor on a single cable, with 80 m maximum slant range and a 300 m depth rating. The DT360Xi is a 2.25 MHz, 360-degree multibeam with up to 1,440 beams, 0.25 m minimum range, up to 20 frames per second and a 1,000 m rating, drawing under 25 W at 24 V. The DT100 Sensor Interface Relay connects one or two sonars with GNSS, MRU, heading and sound velocity inputs for bathymetric survey.
Sidescan: the dual-channel Model 872 YellowFin (260, 330 or 800 kHz), the Model 873 BlackFin (1.1 MHz) and SportScan.
Mechanical scanning: the Model 852 ultra-miniature scanning sonar for the smallest ROVs (675/850 kHz, 2.5 x 22 degree beam, 50 m range, under 200 g in water, 300 m rating, about 2.5 W from 9 to 50 VDC); the 881A and 881L imaging and profiling heads; 831A and 831L pipe-profiling sonars; and the gyro-stabilised 881A-GS, which integrates a low-drift gyro to compensate for host-vehicle rotation, offers 2 mm range resolution at short range, scans out to a 200 m radius and is available rated to 10,000 m.
Echo sounders and altimeters: the 850 precision altimeter, 852 echo sounders, 862 analog, 863 digital and 864 digital programmable altimeters, and 881A/881L echo sounders.
AUV kits: OEM sidescan, Ethernet sidescan (260/330/800 kHz), BlackFin sidescan (1.1 or 2.25 MHz), 120 kHz echo sounder/altimeter and 852-based 675 kHz echo sounder kits packaged for integration inside AUV hulls.
Most systems connect to a Windows PC over Ethernet or RS-485 and are operated with Imagenex control, display and recording software, available from the company's software download page. Imagenex states that every sonar is hand built, individually burned in and ocean tested before shipment, and is backed by a standard one-year warranty and free telephone technical support. The company cites applications in locating shipwrecks, downed aircraft, pipelines, cables, anchors and lost cargo; inspection; underwater engineering and construction; offshore oil and gas support; underwater archaeology; environmental survey; and scientific, recreational and search-and-rescue work. It sells through regional representatives in North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, and exhibits at events including Oceanology International (London, March 2026) and Underwater Intervention (New Orleans, December 2026).
