Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) is a South Korean construction and engineering conglomerate founded in 1947 by Chung Ju-yung as the Hyundai Civil Works Company, making it the founding company of the broader Hyundai business group. It later merged with Hyundai Engineering in 1999, went through a creditor-managed restructuring period from 2001 to 2006, and was acquired by Hyundai Motor Group in 2011 following a competitive bidding process. The company was historically significant as the first Korean construction firm to expand overseas, and played a major role in Korea's Middle East construction boom of the 1970s-1980s, deploying large numbers of Korean laborers on projects in Saudi Arabia and Iran. Today Hyundai E&C organizes its business into five segments: Infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, marine and port facilities), Building & Development (industrial facilities, mixed-use developments, hospitals, offices), Housing (apartment complexes and premium residential projects), Power & Plant (nuclear power plants, oil and gas facilities, refineries, petrochemical and industrial plants), and Future & Environment (nuclear decommissioning, small modular reactors, and renewable energy). In August 2026 the company entered the wearable robotics space with the launch of the X-ble Shoulder exoskeleton, a powered device designed to reduce shoulder and upper-body strain for construction workers performing overhead tasks, reflecting a broader industry push to apply robotics to jobsite safety and worker health. Hyundai E&C has been recognized for sustainability performance, having been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World Index for 15 consecutive years, holding a top A-grade rating from the Korea Corporate Governance Service (KCGS) for seven years, and being a member of the UN Global Compact. Headquartered in the Hyundai Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul, the company maintains regional offices in Gwangju (Honam), Busan (Yeongnam), and Daejeon (Jungbu), and operates a dedicated technical education institute for its workforce. As a large, publicly traded, diversified engineering and construction firm, Hyundai E&C's core business remains heavy civil and building construction, with the X-ble Shoulder exoskeleton representing an emerging robotics-adjacent product line rather than its primary line of business.
