FieldRobotics is a 2021 University of Bologna spin-off building HammerHead, an all-electric tracked autonomous rover with plug-and-play farm implements.
FieldRobotics is an Italian start-up founded in 2021 as a spin-off of the University of Bologna. Its core team consists of professors and researchers in automation, and the company develops and manufactures autonomous electric rovers and related equipment for agriculture. It is based at Via Bazzane 53/A, Calderara di Reno, near Bologna. The company has announced a regional grant and exhibited at Enovitis in campo 2024.
Its main product is HammerHead, a compact, fully electric tracked rover designed to carry out operations across the whole crop cycle with plug-and-play implements. HammerHead was a finalist for Tractor of the Year. The machine is about 8 ft 6 in long, just under 4 ft wide and 27.5 in high, weighs about 1,760 lb and carries up to one ton. Power comes from a 23 kW lithium-ion battery that recharges in as little as 2.5 hours and can be swapped by one person using a trolley. Two 6.7 hp traction motors deliver 20 hp peak, and a separate electric PTO motor produces 65 hp peak and about 18 hp sustained. An electric actuator drives a three-point hitch with 1,400 lb lift. The rover works for up to 8 hours on a charge at more than 4 mph, alone, as part of a fleet or without an on-site operator over 4G/5G.
Navigation combines lidar-based localisation, RTK GPS and stereo cameras so that the robot can operate in greenhouses, orchards and vineyards where satellite reception is poor. A 64-layer lidar detects obstacles; in open fields the rover re-plans around them and in tight rows it stops until the path is clear. Safety features include buzzers, warning lights, a contact bumper and three emergency stops. An optional data kit with AI, laser scanner and cameras builds a digital twin of the field to track leaf density, fruit count, nutrient needs and expected yield.
Reported Italian pricing is about USD 124,000 for the rover, with an electric mulcher, an intra-row disc and a low-dispersion sprayer offered as implements. Another published list price is EUR 130,000, and development began in 2016. HammerHead is sold only in Italy, with international sales planned from January 2027.
