Founded in 1925 by Albert Fezer and Gottlieb Stoll (the company name derives from the founders' surnames), Festo initially manufactured woodworking machinery before pivoting under Kurt Stoll in the 1950s to pneumatics for industrial automation. The woodworking division was spun off and eventually became Festool in 2000.
