Zurich, Switzerland federal technical university founded 1855; its Robotic Systems Lab produced the ANYmal quadruped, spun off as ANYbotics in 2016.
ETH Zurich, formally the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule Zurich, is Switzerland's federal technical university, established by the Swiss Confederation and opened in 1855 under the original name Polytechnikum. Researchers affiliated with the university have received 22 Nobel Prizes to date, and the institution operates across 16 departments spanning engineering, natural sciences, architecture, and management and social sciences.
Robotics work at ETH Zurich is organized within the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, part of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, which houses the Robotic Systems Lab among its groups. The lab's research into legged locomotion produced the ANYmal quadrupedal robot, work that led to the 2016 founding of the spin-off company ANYbotics by researchers Peter Fankhauser and Hanspeter Fassler, who commercialized the platform for industrial inspection tasks. ANYmal has continued to serve as a research platform at ETH Zurich and at partner institutions such as the University of Oxford.
The university's technology-transfer activity regularly produces spin-off companies from its engineering and computer science departments, extending its robotics and intelligent-systems research into commercial products beyond ANYbotics.
