French-Japanese CNRS-AIST lab in Tsukuba researching humanoid autonomy, motion planning and control on HRP-5P, HRP-4CR and Kawasaki RHP Friends.
The CNRS-AIST Joint Robotics Laboratory (JRL) is an International Research Laboratory (IRL3218) recognised by both France's Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). It sits in AIST's Department of Information Technology and Human Factors at the AIST Tsukuba Central 1 site, 1-1-1 Umezono, Tsukuba, Ibaraki. The lab is directed by Fumio Kanehiro, who joined AIST's predecessor Electrotechnical Laboratory in 2000, with Guillaume Caron and Hiroshi Kaminaga also in the direction team; permanent researchers include Kenji Kaneko, Mehdi Benallegue, Rafael Cisneros-Limon, Iori Kumagai and Masaki Murooka, alongside French and Japanese postdocs, engineers and PhD students.
JRL's research focuses on increasing robot autonomy, particularly on humanoid platforms. Its main subjects are task and motion planning and control, multimodal interaction through perception, and cognitive robotics. Current projects listed on its site include Ant'noid, CalcADN, CALL, a Robotics Foundation Model project, HAMMER, iCPH, ImpAdm, RLOptMCP, MORAL and SDP4ESI.
The lab's robot fleet includes HRP-5P (joined 2018) and HRP-4CR (joined 2022), both manufactured by Kawada Robotics, Kawasaki Heavy Industries' RHP Friends (2022), Enchanted Tools' Miroki (2025) and CALL-M, an AIST-built platform added in 2024. HRP-5P was developed by AIST's former Humanoid Research Group (Intelligent Systems Research Institute), led by Kanehiro, and unveiled in November 2018 as a 182 cm, 101 kg humanoid with 37 degrees of freedom intended to perform heavy labour or work in hazardous environments; AIST demonstrated it autonomously installing gypsum board panels for construction sites. Earlier AIST humanoids in the HRP series include HRP-2, HRP-3 and HRP-4.
