Wroclaw developer (founded 2021) of musculoskeletal androids driven by water-powered Myofiber artificial muscles: Clone Hand and the Clone Alpha android.
Clone (Clone Robotics) develops biomimetic, musculoskeletal humanoid robots in which anatomically modelled skeletons are moved by artificial muscles rather than electric joint motors. It was formally incorporated in late 2021 by Dhanush Radhakrishnan (CEO) and Lukasz Kozlik (CTO), operates as Clone Sp. z o.o. in Wroclaw, Poland and Clone, Inc. in the United States, and opened a second office in Mountain View, California in 2025. Kozlik's work on McKibben-type artificial muscles dates back to 2014, and an early robotic arm prototype was published in 2019 under the Automaton Robotics name.
Core technology. Clone's proprietary Myofiber is a monolithic musculotendon unit attached to anatomically accurate points on the bones; the company says this construction prevents tendon failures. Its stated target performance for a single 3 g fiber is a response time under 50 ms, more than 30% unloaded contraction and at least 1 kg of contraction force. The muscles are hydraulically actuated with water, and the robots run on water and electricity.
Products. The Clone Hand was the company's first product line; after eight years of R&D the hand uses back-drivable, antagonistic muscles and tendons, an opposable thumb, a rounded palm and soft muscle, fat and skin layers. Clone lists motions such as finger abduction/adduction, lumbrical flexing and full wrist flexion, deviation and pronation/supination, and shows the index finger pulling a power-drill trigger; successive versions include the Synthetic Hand v18 (2023), a ligament-based V19 and a teleoperated V2 hand. Clone Alpha is a bipedal android companion for individuals and businesses, sold as an 'Alpha edition' with pre-orders on the company website; it is described as a soft-bodied, featherweight android that converses in natural language through large language models and uses edge GPU compute. A full-body prototype, Protoclone, was shown in video in February 2025, and Neoclone is listed as in development. Demonstrations to date have shown suspended-frame movement rather than independent walking.
Funding. Investors reported for the company include Initialized Capital, Pioneer Fund, Lux Capital and angel investor Trevor Blackwell, and the company has also raised money through equity crowdfunding on Republic.
