Badland Batteries is a product line of Packet Digital, a lithium-ion battery and power-electronics manufacturer based in Fargo, North Dakota. The batteries are designed, assembled and tested at Packet Digital's Fargo facility for use in unmanned aircraft, drones and electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing platforms.
The product line supplies lithium-ion battery packs configured for high energy density and high power output, aimed at longer flight times and reduced charging time compared with off-the-shelf consumer cells; a 12S pack rated at 17,000 mAh is among the current catalog offerings. Every pack is third-party UN38.3 certified for air and ground transport, and the printed circuit boards, battery-management systems and cell assemblies are produced in the United States. Packet Digital has built custom battery packs for the Lockheed Martin Indago 4 small unmanned aircraft system; a Lockheed Martin engineer reported one pack reaching roughly 1,000 charge cycles with about 11 percent capacity degradation during customer testing.
Terri Zimmerman serves as chief executive of Packet Digital and Badland Batteries. Battery packs are sold directly through the company's online store, and Packet Digital has stated plans to add domestic battery-cell production to reduce reliance on imported cells.
