Zoox Inc. is an autonomous vehicle company headquartered in Foster City, California, and operates as an independent subsidiary of Amazon, which acquired the company in June 2020 for approximately $1.2–1.3 billion. Founded in 2014 by Tim Kentley-Klay and Jesse Levinson, Zoox set out to design a ground-up autonomous vehicle rather than retrofitting existing passenger cars. The core product is a bidirectional, fully electric robotaxi measuring 3.63 meters in length, with no steering wheel, no pedals, and no front-facing driver seat.
Up to four passengers face each other in a carriage-style interior equipped with aloe-green seating, a touchscreen display, and two-way audio built into the door. The vehicle uses a sensor suite comprising 40 cameras, lidar, radar, and infrared sensors to navigate urban streets, and can operate at speeds up to 75 mph (120 km/h). In June 2025, Zoox opened its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Hayward, California, targeting production capacity of more than 10,000 robotaxis annually.
Public testing operations have expanded across Foster City, Las Vegas, and San Francisco. In November 2025, Zoox launched the Zoox Explorers program in San Francisco, offering free rides in neighborhoods including SoMa and the Mission District. The company is also conducting safety-driver testing in Austin, Miami, and Seattle using Toyota Highlander vehicles.
Zoox targets mobility-as-a-service deployments in small- to medium-sized U.S. cities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had logged 123 incidents involving Zoox vehicles in autonomous mode as of March 2026, a figure the company has disclosed as part of its federal reporting obligations. Amazon's backing provides access to capital, cloud infrastructure, and logistics expertise as Zoox moves toward commercial launch.
