"Striding into tomorrow"
IIT Kanpur spin-off founded in 2023 that makes the SVAN M2 quadruped, the DHAV legged and DHAV-Hy wheel-legged robots, and QDD A2 joint actuators.
xTerra Robotics is an Indian legged-robot company founded in March 2023 and incubated at IIT Kanpur through the Foundation for Innovation and Research in Science and Technology (FIRST). The "x" in the name stands for any variable and "Terra" for terrain. The company grew out of legged-robot research that Aditya Pratap Singh Rajawat began in 2019 at IIT Kanpur's Mobile Robotics Lab, working with Prof. Shakti S. Gupta and Prof. Mangal Kothari and in collaboration with defence research labs. Rajawat and Gupta are listed as directors. The team of about 15 people includes five co-founders, most from IIT Kanpur, and eight staff in R&D. The registered office is in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where robots are assembled and integrated; the website gives a primary place of business in Bengaluru, and manufacturing is outsourced to partners in the Bengaluru area.
Robots. The SVAN M2 is presented as India's first commercial quadruped robot. It weighs 11 kg, carries about 5 kg, reaches 1.0 m/s and measures 41.2 x 40 x 41.2 cm. It has 12 actuated degrees of freedom driven by the company's QDD A2 actuators, a 240 Wh lithium-polymer battery, a Raspberry Pi 4B (8 GB) running ROS, and operates from -5 to 40 C. Optional payloads include a PTZ camera, lidar, thermal imaging and the company's lightweight Cobot C1 arm, which is used for pipe inspection, operating switches and moving objects. The first SVAN M2 was delivered to IIT Palakkad in January 2024. An earlier carbon-fibre prototype was called SVAN M1.
Two larger platforms are open for pre-sales. DHAV is an autonomous quadruped of up to 19.5 kg with 12 quasi-direct-drive actuators (40 Nm hip and thigh, 80 Nm knee), a top speed of about 12 km/h, 360-degree 3D lidar plus stereo depth, ROS2 with Python/C++ SDK, and RF joystick and web teleoperation. DHAV-Hy is a wheel-legged variant of about 22 kg with locking hub-drive wheels that roll at up to about 18 km/h and switch to walking for stairs and rough ground. Both are aimed at security patrol, perimeter monitoring, construction sites and industrial inspection.
Components. The QDD A2 quasi-direct-drive actuator (12 Nm peak torque, 550 g, 14-bit encoder, CAN bus, open SDK) is built for legged robots, robot arms and dynamic manipulation. The company says its gearbox design is patented. Actuators are sold directly, through resellers and on the Robu electronics marketplace.
Customers and business. xTerra reports 12 customers across the Cobot C1 and SVAN M2 and cumulative revenue above INR 10 million. Customers include IITs and NITs, which also receive training from the company, and a pharmaceutical company that ran a one-month pilot automating audit inspections. It targets power, oil and gas, automotive and pharmaceutical plants, as well as military, paramilitary and law-enforcement users. Sales go through resellers in Kanpur and Gujarat and through the government GeM portal. Funding so far has come from revenue and non-dilutive support: a Social Innovation Lab grant at IIT Kanpur, a convertible note from the I-Hub Foundation for Cobotics at IIT Delhi for SVAN M2 production, and a product-development grant from ITEL (Immersive Technology and Entrepreneurship Labs) in Chennai. Output was about five robots per quarter in 2026, with a target of 50 per quarter for one product line.
