Welltec A/S is a Danish oilfield technology company headquartered in Allerod, Denmark, founded in 1994 by Jorgen Hallundbaek, who conceived the Well Tractor concept in 1987 while completing a thesis at the Technical University of Denmark. The company is privately held and employs more than 1,000 people worldwide.
Welltec's original product, the Well Tractor, is a self-propelled downhole tool run on electric wireline that moves other tools into highly deviated and horizontal wells without coiled tubing or hydraulic intervention equipment; it completed its first field trial with ConocoPhillips in 1994. The product range has since grown to include the Well Stroker linear actuator, introduced in 2001, the Well Miller and Well Cutter milling and cutting tools, the Well Cleaner PST, and the Welltec Annular Barrier, a metal expandable packer introduced in 2010 for well completions. In 2022 the company opened a Test Flow Loop facility in Esbjerg, Denmark, to support work in carbon capture and storage.
Intervention tools are manufactured at the Allerod headquarters, while completion products are built at the company's Esbjerg site. Welltec has received multiple OTC Spotlight on New Technology Awards and ICoTA Intervention Technology Awards for its downhole tools.
