"Sustainable nutritious plant-based allergen-free protein and fibre ingredients."
UK agri-food firm turning broccoli side-streams into protein and fibre ingredients, with its own patented ML-guided selective harvester, Harvesta.
Upcycled Plant Power Limited, trading as UPP (and Freya), is a UK company (Companies House no. 14171122) headquartered at the Agri-Tech Centre on the Harper Adams University campus in Edgmond, Newport, Shropshire. Its main business is the B2B supply of plant-based protein and fibre ingredients made from broccoli side-streams, the stems and leaves normally left in the field after head harvest. David Whitewood is CEO and co-founder.
The robotics element of the business is Harvesta, a patent-protected automated selective harvester. In its 2023 description of the concept system, the company explained that a tractor carries a 3D camera and an on-board computer running a computer vision model that identifies broccoli heads ready to pick; the system then locates, cuts, lifts and transports the crop with minimal human involvement at up to 3 km/h, and collects more of each plant than manual crews. Technologists at the University of Lincoln helped develop the system. UPP states that Harvesta has been trialled in Scotland and Lincolnshire, and has announced plans for UK commercial deployment in 2026 and international deployment in 2027. A companion data portal, Intellia, is intended to support precision agriculture.
On the ingredient side, UPP's named products are Fiba (a fermented broccoli fibre), Bynda, Prota, Necta and Ova. The ingredients are vegan, brassica-based and free of the 14 UK/EU declarable allergens, with recommended inclusion rates of 4-30%, including in hybrid meat products. Feedstock is sourced from UK growers in summer and from Spain in winter. The facility includes a 1,000 tonne-per-year production line used for process development and initial production, with a stated roadmap to 10,000 tonnes per year. An independent interim life-cycle assessment reports below 0.25 kg CO2e per kg.
The company holds BRCGS Grade A certification and ISO 9001, operates HACCP, and is a member of Sedex, the Food & Drink Federation and the Upcycled Food Association. UPP reports that a major supermarket's regulatory committee cleared Fiba and Bynda as non-novel foods and that two Tier 1 food producers have given approval status.
