Scottish-founded (1991) maker of Gemini multibeam and SeaKing scanning sonars for ROVs and AUVs, built in Ulverston; part of General Oceans since 2022.
Tritech International Limited is a British designer and manufacturer of underwater acoustic sensors, best known for its Gemini multibeam imaging sonars and mechanically scanning sonars used on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), trenchers and other subsea platforms. The company is registered in Scotland (registration number 85501) with its registered office at Peregrine Road, Westhill Business Park, Westhill, Aberdeenshire. It has a sales and application support office in Aberdeen and a design, manufacturing and service facility at Oubas Hill, Ulverston, Cumbria, in England's Lake District, plus sales offices in the USA and Singapore and a global reseller network.
Tritech was founded in 1991 by Richard Marsh and Dick Wright, starting as a two-man business in a converted house in Kingswells, Aberdeenshire, and moving to Westhill Business Park in 1994. The same year it received a Queen's Award for Export Achievement, followed by a Queen's Award for Innovation in 2001. Early on it formed a joint venture with System Technologies (ST) of Ulverston. In 2006 the company became part of Halma plc, and in 2007 Halma also acquired Sonar Research and Development (SRD), whose multibeam expertise was merged into Tritech's Ulverston site in 2009. Halma sold Tritech to US motion-control group Moog Inc. in August 2012. In 2022 Moog sold the business to General Oceans, an underwater technology group whose other companies include Nortek, Klein Marine Systems, Strategic Robotic Systems, Reach Robotics and RS Aqua. General Oceans ASA listed on Euronext Oslo Bors in 2026. Steve Ward, previously in leadership roles at Atlas Elektronik, was appointed Executive Vice President and General Manager of Tritech in September 2025.
The Gemini multibeam family is the main product line. The current range includes the Gemini 1200id for work-class ROVs (720 kHz or 1200 kHz, rated to 4000 m), the dual-frequency Gemini 1200ikd with a 120-degree field of view at both frequencies (500 m or 1000 m), the Gemini 720is (1000 m or 4000 m), the shallow-water Gemini 720iks with CHIRP processing (350 m), the Gemini NBI narrow-beam imager with a 130-degree swath (4000 m), and the compact MicronGemini 720s with a 90-degree horizontal field of view and 50 m range (300 m or 750 m). Earlier milestones in the line include the Gemini 720i, which won the Subsea UK Innovation and Technology Award in 2011, the Gemini 720im launched in 2018 as the company's smallest multibeam, the Gemini 1200ik introduced at DSEI 2019, and the 360-degree Gemini 720ik launched in 2021.
Mechanically scanning sonars include the Super SeaKing DST, with a 360-degree field of view, and the dual-frequency Super SeaPrince, both using Digital Sonar Technology and CHIRP and rated to 4000 m. Other products include the Gemini 620pd profiling echo sounder, the PA200/PA500 MKII precision altimeters (rated to 700 m, 4000 m or 6800 m), the Super SeaKing 704 bathymetric system for depth, conductivity and temperature, Gemini software and SDKs, and interface units. Tritech also makes ROV dredge and suction pumps, including the Super ZipJet, the 35 to 60 hp Merlin dredge pump and the AnchorZip 10 suction anchor pump. In 2020 it launched a Diver Mounted Display, and in 2015 it signed a deal with Kraken Sonar to produce the AquaTrak CVL as an alternative to a Doppler velocity log.
Products carry a three-year warranty, and Tritech offers 24/7 support plus repair, calibration and servicing through its Ulverston facility. The company holds ISO 9001:2015 certification for its Westhill and Ulverston sites. Published customer testimonials come from Ashtead Technology, which describes Tritech as a benchmark for its sensor procurement, Underwater Acoustics International, which runs the Gemini 1200ikd on its ROVs, and Canadian ROV maker SEAMOR Marine, which became a Tritech reseller on Canada's west coast. Main markets are offshore energy, defence, hydrographic survey and marine research.
