Tokyo Robotics (Japan, f. 2015, Yaskawa subsidiary) designs the Torobo wheeled humanoid and Tolon mobile manipulator with torque-sensing impedance control for.
Tokyo Robotics Inc. (Higashi Tokyo Robotikusu Kabushiki Gaisha) is a Japanese robotics developer founded in 2015 and headquartered in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. The company designs and manufactures humanoid robots, robot arms, mobile manipulators, and 3D vision sensors, with a strong focus on torque sensing and impedance control technologies that enable safe, compliant interaction between robots and humans or unstructured environments. As of July 2025, Tokyo Robotics operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Yaskawa Electric Corporation, which acquired it to accelerate development of next-generation humanoid actuator technology.
Tokyo Robotics' flagship product is the Torobo full-size humanoid robot, a wheeled humanoid standing 1,615 to 1,660 mm tall and weighing approximately 160 kg. Torobo features 24 degrees of freedom: 7-axis dual arms, a 3-axis waist, a 3-axis neck, and a 4-axis omni-directional mobile base. Each arm has a reach of 680 mm and a payload of 8 kg continuous (20 kg instantaneous peak). Torque sensors are integrated at all arm and waist joints, enabling impedance control for compliant, contact-rich task execution including assembly, tool use, and manipulation involving active contact with the environment. Torobo is fully ROS-compatible (with support for MoveIt!, Gazebo, and deep predictive learning frameworks), making it a widely used research platform in Japan for robot learning and AI-driven manipulation research. The robot's omni-directional wheeled base allows repositioning in constrained spaces without the engineering complexity of bipedal walking, and it has a 3-hour operating runtime.
The Torobo Arm is sold as a standalone 7-axis robot arm unit for research and industrial applications. It features the same torque-sensing and impedance control technology and is available in standard and mini configurations (Torobo Arm Mini). The arm received the Jitsuyoka Tech Award from the Robotics Society of Japan and an Excellent Product Award from the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Tolon is Tokyo Robotics' one-armed mobile manipulator, a purpose-built mobile robot with an asymmetric arm arrangement on an omni-directional base. Tolon is designed for narrow-space operation and marketed for autonomous material handling, short-distance transport, security, and patrol applications.
The Torobo Eye series comprises compact 3D structured-light cameras for robotic vision. Two models exist: the SL40 (shorter range) and SL80 (longer range). Applications include 3D bin picking and industrial quality inspection. Research deployments include Waseda University, Tokyo Women's Medical University, and Japan's JST Moonshot R&D Program. Pre-acquisition investors included AgVenture Lab, INDEE Capital, Igarashi Motoren, NEXs Tokyo, and Yamaha Motor.
