Thinking Robots Inc.
Developer of AI software enabling robots to be instructed in natural language without programming or prior training, with on-the-fly learning and task.
Thinking Robots, Inc. is a Boston, Massachusetts-based software company founded in 2010 that develops AI software enabling robots to be instructed and operated through natural language rather than traditional programming. The company's core platform provides an integrated cognitive robotic control architecture that combines natural language dialogue, graphical interfaces, sensor integration, and high-level task planning. A defining feature of the system is that end users require no programming experience: robots can be assigned tasks through spoken or typed natural language instructions, and the software learns on the fly without requiring prior data collection or training runs.
The platform supports a broad range of robotic applications including factory automation, collaborative robots, and social robots. Robots running Thinking Robots software can answer operator questions, report on task status, and communicate what they know or do not know, supporting transparent human-robot teaming. The company has received grant funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, including a $253,840 grant awarded in December 2020, and has received support from MassRobotics, a prominent Boston-based robotics innovation hub.
Thinking Robots offers its software as a customizable solution deployable on any robotic platform with standardized sensor and actuator interfaces, making it hardware-agnostic. The company competes in the emerging segment of natural language robot programming alongside companies developing large language model-based robot instruction systems. Its backers and institutional affiliations reflect a focus on advancing human-robot interaction research and translating it into practical industrial and service robot deployments.
